HAITI

“In 2025, up to 2.85 million of Haiti’s children face severe — often life-threatening — food insecurity; more than a million are at emergency-level hunger, yet only a few thousand receive critical malnutrition treatment. Meanwhile, gang violence and displacement uproot hundreds of thousands of children, pushing families deeper into poverty and cutting off access to schooling, healthcare and safety.”

The crisis in Haiti affects a large share of the child population — potentially 1 in 4 children face high food insecurity; over 1 million children live in emergency-level hunger.

Acute malnutrition is spreading quickly: recent years show sharp increases, and current treatment is far below what’s needed.

The humanitarian system is overwhelmed: despite high need, major funding gaps mean only a small portion of children receive life-saving aid.

Violence, displacement and breakdown of services make the crisis multi-dimensional — hunger, lack of shelter, interrupted schooling, child protection risks all coincide.

Education and normal childhood — already fragile — are collapsing; many children are denied schooling due to violence or displacement. Children facing high food insecurity ≈ 2.85 million children — about one quarter of all children in Haiti.

Children facing emergency-level food insecurity Over 1 million children (among the 2.85 M) facing critical food insecurity as of April 2025.

Threat of famine, risk of acute malnutrition; families struggle to provide basic nutrition.

Recent cases of children treated for Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) ~ 4,600 children treated so far in 2025 This is a small fraction (≈ 3.6%) of the ~ 129,000 children projected to need life-saving SAM treatment this year.

Rise in malnutrition risk (2024) An estimated 19% increase in number of children suffering from SAM in 2024 (compared to prior) in some areas.

Caused by armed violence, worsening food insecurity, breakdown of services.

Population with acute hunger / food insecurity (all ages) ≈ 5.7 million people — about 51% of Haiti’s population — projected to be acutely food insecure (2025)

Humanitarian aid gaps / response limitations Nutrition-aid programme faces ≈ 70% funding gap (as of 2025), severely limiting reach.

Only a tiny fraction of children needing treatment are being reached; many remain at risk.
